Get to Know embrella 40 Club Member Mary Sterling
How long have you been fostering?
How many children in foster care have you had in your home?
How many of these children (if any) have you adopted?
What made you become a foster parent?
I wanted to adopt, and then heard about foster parenting. I had never heard of it, but when I began doing it, I actually loved it. I got involved in helping lots more children and families and didn’t adopt until 9-10 years later. In the early days, you had to sign a paper saying that you wouldn’t adopt the child. Things are much different now.
What advice would you give to your fellow foster parents?
Be flexible, and always be willing to change your mind.
What is the most important thing you would like the public to know about foster families?
That there’s not any money it it. Raising kids is the hardest job in the world. Raising someone else’s kids is even harder. We could get a job with a lot less hours and more pay, but we do this because we want to help the children and their families.
How has embrella helped you as a foster parent?
All the training and the support of other foster parents. That’s what allows me to do this.
